Description

The two rival spymasters know the secret identities of 25 agents. Their teammates know the agents only by their CODENAMES.

The teams compete to see who can make contact with all of their agents first. Spymasters give one-word clues that allude to multiple words on the board. Their teammates try to guess words of the right color while avoiding those that belong to the opposing team.  Both teams want to avoid the assassin as it’s game over if this card is revealed.  The cunning and brilliant aspects of gameplay in Codenames led to this game winning the coveted Game of The Year (Spiel Des Jahres) award in 2016.  Not only do you want to reveal your own Secret Agents identities to your team, but you need to be super careful not to use any words which may reveal a spy on the opposing team, or worse still… the deadly assassin!

This makes the game more multi layered than at first glance. Another variable to the game is that it very much depends on how the two teams tune in to the thought process of the Spymasters clues. This can lead to much frustration if you are not quite on the same wavelength!!   However, another of the games plus points is that it is only approximately 15 mins in duration, and so, if the Spymaster is not quite clicking with the team, you can always change the role of Spymaster at the end of each round to keep things fresh and interesting.  There are also an infinite amount of variations in the board, card, and word layout (as well as personal interpretation of this) which means that two games of Codenames will never be the same!
